Imagine Peace

Posted on October 24, 2020October 24, 2020 by Ava Haraldsson

Hello everyone! This week, as we’ve been exploring quarantined Iceland, my family and I have decidedly discovered a new favorite lunch place. Grandi Mathöll, a few blocks down from where we’re living, has finally given us enough choice that agreeing on a place out is easy. I’m partial to the pizza stand, while my brother’s a fan of the tikka masala, and my dad korean tacos– but all of the food is really good!

Wanting to get out the other night, and anxious to go somewhere farther than around the block, we decided to hit our favorite spot, everyone heading for their usuals. Piling back into the car, my brother asked about the faint column of light he could see in the distance. My dad told us that it was an art installation by Yoko Ono in honor of  her husband, John Lennon. Lit on October 9th, to celebrate his birthday, the Imagine Peace Tower remains bright until December 8th, the day Lennon was killed.

Deciding we wanted to get closer, we drove to Sundahöfn where we could see the Imagine Peace Tower in it’s full glory– and I have to say it was amazing. Standing before it in virtual darkness, the column of light looks like something straight out of a movie (and I must admit there was some debate as to whether the Bat Signal would realistically cast a shadow, based on what we could see in front of us). An awe inspiring token to both peace and John Lennon, both the Imagine Peace Tower (and a meal from Grandi Mathöll!), made the night one to remember.
