The Icelandic Association of Washington D.C., Inc. held its first meeting on 9 October 1969 at the Watergate Hotel with eighty-three people in attendance. Officers were elected and by-laws discussed, followed by a movie on Iceland and homemade Icelandic cookies. Now over 40 years later the association is still growing and ever expanding.
Icelandic Association Events
The Icelandic Association hosts several events throughout the year, starting with the Thorrablot, a formal dinner and dancing event with traditional food brought in from Iceland. Then there is our 17 June Independence Day celebration held at the Ambassador’s Residency, Fall picnic, Christmas Bazaar in November and finally a Christmas family gathering in December where the kids sing and dance around the tree, followed by a visit from Santa.
