Lockdown Blues

Posted on October 16, 2020October 24, 2020 by Ava Haraldsson

Hey everybody! As I’m sure many of you know, Iceland has gone into a mini lockdown due to rising cases of COVID. No fatalities have been reported, but in an attempt to prevent further spread, gyms, pools, and other establishments have been shut down, and stricter distancing policies have been put in place with current regulations set to be enforced through October 19.

As to be expected, these new rules have led to definite changes for a variety of different activities. With no access to indoor gyms, sports teams have been getting creative, posting online workouts for players to follow, including weight sets and long runs. As someone who plays basketball, for me it’s meant that it’s time to break out the running shoes!

Additionally, some schools, such as Landakotsskoli which my sister attends, have been experiencing delayed schedules in attempts to stagger the times that students are inside buildings, while many older kids continue to function in semi-online environments. Even the mail has taken a hit, with standard letters taking 3-5 weeks to be sent from the U.S. to Iceland. If you plan to send things overseas for the holidays, I’d recommend leaving plenty of time for it to reach its destination!

And while everything may seem a little strange now, I’m hopeful that case levels and activities will return to normal soon… but if you are still curious, check out this link to see the current trend of cases in Iceland!
