Our New Column: Ava in Iceland

Posted on October 6, 2020 by Ava Haraldsson

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Haraldsson, and as a current online senior at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland, who is (secretly) spending the semester in Iceland, I’m excited to write about my time here. Over the next few weeks, I’ll fill you in on the local happenings, and share what I hope to be some exciting stories from my stay.

A little bit of information about me: As I mentioned, I’m a senior at B-CC. Since my dad is from Iceland, and we’ve visited frequently, when we found out school was online, my family decided to seriously consider the idea of spending a “semester abroad.” As of right now we’ve been here for about a month, (we arrived on August 31st and are staying in Vesturbær), and have been starting to adjust to life in Iceland– though it’s probably worth mentioning that my brother, mother, sister, and I, have a less than limited knowledge of the Icelandic language. Due to this, we’ve been trying to get involved in our community in other ways, participating in a variety of activities around Reykjavík, in an attempt to connect to our newfound home. More details to come on those adventures in the next few weeks– because I figure, why not share what I’m up to with people who probably know more about it than me? But truly, I’m excited to share what I’m up to, and I hope you guys have as much fun reading this series as I’ll have writing it!

Our mission is to promote and celebrate our Icelandic traditions and heritage. We do this mainly through our much anticipated annual events (June 17th Independence Day Picnic, Þorrablót, Jólabazaar, Children’s Christmas Party, and Annual Meeting) but are open to other ideas.

History

The Icelandic Association of Washington, DC held its first meeting on October 9,1969. We welcome all: native Icelanders, American/Icelanders, and those who just love all things Icelandic!
