Sella was eager for the company of fellow Icelanders when she arrived in Norfolk, Virginia in 1983. She soon found one Icelandic woman in town, who pointed to another. Like unraveling the threads in a woolen sweater, she found, within a year, well over 100 Icelanders and formed the Icelandic Association in Norfolk.
Now that cooler weather is upon us, it’s time to break out those soup recipes. This one warms my heart and soul. Nothing beats coming into the coziness of your home after being outside in the cold then supping together over this hearty comfort dish.

This week, as we’ve been exploring quarantined Iceland, my family and I have decidedly discovered a new favorite lunch place.
Hey everybody! As I’m sure many of you know, Iceland has gone into a mini lockdown due to rising cases of COVID. No fatalities have been reported, but in an attempt to prevent further spread, gyms, pools, and other establishments have been shut down, and stricter distancing policies have been put in place with current regulations set to be enforced through October 19.
In a smoke-filled bar and later in the restaurant of the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, a diverse group, which included a fighter pilot, an economist and an artist met during the summer of 1969. They had one thing in common. They were passionate about Iceland, and intent on establishing a US-Iceland Association.
Eating this cake brings me back to my Amma’s flat in 101 Reykjavík, sitting round her little table; I was allowed to have coffee with the cake just like the grownups! It is great all year round not just the holidays.
